Restaurants are a defining feature of any local flavor, both literally and figuratively. The food business may appear simple to the casual observer, but the service, ambiance, and overall dining experience are a constant balancing act. And when the pandemic struck in early 2020, it sent the hospitality industry careening into uncertainty. Lockdowns forced the end of indoor dining and restaurants with minimal takeout sales watched their revenues plummet overnight.

How to combat negativity in the workplace

How to combat negativity in the workplace

March 31, 2022

We all experience negativity in some form or another, whether it’s on the news, during our commute, or from the people closest to us. Negativity and complaining can be especially common in the workplace, where workloads, office politics, and day to day stress and emotions intersect.

Is multi-tasking the biggest productivity myth out there?

Is multi-tasking the biggest productivity myth out there?

March 17, 2022

The short answer? Probably.

Multi-tasking. We’ve all heard about it and perhaps even touted it as something we’re great at it. But should we be proud of our multi-tasking abilities?

Active listening for authentic connection

Active listening for authentic connection

March 10, 2022

Listening is much like driving: everyone thinks they’re great at it, so few take the time to consider how to improve. But listening is a skill that can be honed and perfected to create greater employee buy-in, increased team morale, and overall organizational success. It can also lead to more genuine, authentic, and symbiotic relationships.

How to write a gratitude letter that'll blow someone away

How to write a gratitude letter that'll blow someone away

March 3, 2022

Writing a gratitude letter may seem like an overblown thank you note, but that’s simply not true. Imagine how you would feel if you received an honest, truthful letter that thanked you for how you impacted someone’s life?

A look at Siegfried's culture

A look at Siegfried's culture

January 13, 2022

We like to have fun at Siegfried. So much fun, in fact, it’s one of our company values. (The others are being fair and building and sharing stakeholder value.) This focus on fun and sharing value across employees and friends of the Firm was on display at our National Summit in Las Vegas, NV.

The magic in showing gratitude

The magic in showing gratitude

November 18, 2021

Until a few years ago, I placed myself solidly in the “Christmas is the best holiday of the year” camp. For me, Thanksgiving was a stop on the way to Cookieville and Christmas Tree Town. But, as the promise of new toys became less interesting, I realized that Thanksgiving has its own kind of magic. It’s slow and subtle, but Thanksgiving reminds us all to stop and say thank you. To be grateful for what we have and what others give us. (And of course, to eat lots of mashed potatoes.)

The power in seeing people as people

The power in seeing people as people

November 11, 2021

Assuming you don’t see people as aliens or subhumans, you might be asking yourself, “What other way is there to see people besides people?” Well, when you are focused, obsessed, and absorbed with your own interests and activities, it’s likely that you are only thinking of the people around you as far as they impact you. Perhaps you see them as competition, or as a roadblock, or perhaps an ally. Basically, you see them as objects and not as the complex, thoughtful beings they are. And that’s a problem.

Assuming you don't see people as aliens or subhumans...

Lessons from the Last Airbender

Lessons from the Last Airbender

September 16, 2021

Children’s movies and TV shows hold a special place not only in our hearts, but in the collective media of our society. Large creators like Disney and Pixar craft beautiful, relatable characters and stories that do not simply entertain the latest generation, but provide social commentary in simple but powerful ways for more mature minds.
