Three ways to be a more empathetic leader

Three ways to be a more empathetic leader

January 23, 2020

Empathy, our ability to sense other people’s emotions and to imagine what they may be thinking or feeling, enables us to become better leaders of ourselves and others. If we can’t understand or appreciate what other people feel, how can we expect to relate to them and lead them successfully? And, if you don’t take time to understand what you’re feeling, how can you lead yourself?

Bah, humbug! Simple lessons from holiday classics

Bah, humbug! Simple lessons from holiday classics

December 20, 2019

Ah, it’s that time of year! Jingle bells are jingling, carolers are singing, and grocery stores everywhere have a line.

There’s only one weekend left before Christmas, and it’s a perfect time to sit down with your friends and family and watch a holiday classic or two. Maybe It’s a Wonderful Life, or How the Grinch Stole Christmas (one or all of the versions), or Elf. One of our favorite things about holiday movies? There’s always some kind of lesson we can learn.

Ah, it's that time of year! Jingle bells are jingling...

7 fun holiday traditions to make the season sparkle

7 fun holiday traditions to make the season sparkle

December 12, 2019

The last month of the year is busy. With all the holiday parties, dinners, shopping, baking, wrapping, and celebrating, it’s easier than you think to succumb to exhaustion. But, instead of getting rattled by all the things you have on your plate, take a little time to find joy in the season. After all, part of living a full life is appreciating the small moments and focusing on the positive aspects of your life.

The magic in showing gratitude

The magic in showing gratitude

November 27, 2019

Until a few years ago, I placed myself solidly in the “Christmas is the best holiday of the year” camp. For me, Thanksgiving was a stop on the way to Cookieville and Christmas Tree Town. But, as the promise of new toys became less interesting, I realized that Thanksgiving has its own kind of magic. It’s slow and subtle, but Thanksgiving reminds us all to stop and say thank you. To be grateful for what we have and what others give us. (And of course, to eat lots of mashed potatoes.)

Unpacking a jam-packed schedule

Unpacking a jam-packed schedule

November 21, 2019

After working an almost 10-hour day, arriving home makes you want to relax with your family or enjoy well-deserved time to yourself. But there are always so many other things to do: dinner needs to be on the table soon, dishes and laundry are piling up, the bathroom is crying out for a good cleaning, the lawn needs mowing, lunches need packing, and the list goes on and on.

How do we accomplish all of the things that we need to do around the house after a long day or week, and also make the best of our time, for ourselves or with our families? Here are a few insights on how to connect with others with a jam-packed schedule.

After working an almost 10-hour day, arriving home ma...

Lessons learned from my 111-year-old great-grandmother

Lessons learned from my 111-year-old great-grandmother

November 7, 2019

My great grandmother, Downing Jett Kay, was born on November 23, 1907 which means she is just a few weeks shy of being 112 years old! That makes Gramma D, as she is colloquially addressed, the oldest person in the state of Maryland, the 18th oldest person in the United States, and the 65th oldest person in the world (if we’re trusting Wikipedia).
